This panel proposes to present a perspective on Asia-Africa negotiations of margins concerning representation and resistance using three representational modes of the text: the policy, film and the curated art-- to examine transnational flows around power and agency and their meaning-production. The objective here is threefold: firstly, to acknowledge the perception of ‘the other’ about the migrant African population, especially in contemporary India; secondly, to review how filmmakers subtly subvert the representational dynamic of ‘the other,’ in cinematic story-telling, with a close examination of Ousmane Sembene’s film Black Girl, and thirdly, to consider specific art forums such as the Biennale for their simultaneous support and critique of the Asian-African transnational flows and margins.
The three panellists (proposing this panel) come from India and from an Art and Design institute, where their pedagogy and practice have a conscious engagement with resistance politics and their narratives. The panel hopes to contribute to the ongoing debates around the threat of ‘homogenisation’ of societies. It draws on specific contexts of these texts in art and media practice. The panel seeks new ways of asking questions around common histories and traditions of our societies and perhaps develop a potential conversation around care and inclusivity.
