In 1930, a Vietnamese communist named Trần Tử Yến was convicted by the French colonial administration of endangering state security and attempted murder. The young rebel was deported from Indochina to the “special penitentiary establishments” in French Guyana. He died in Cayenne in 2001 at the age of 92. His daughter Josette decided to visit Vietnam. She would have to face a family who considered her father a hero and his younger brother, who wanted to understand why he never returned.
