Alexandra Joy Forman is President and founding director of the Urca Institute, aimed at documenting and sharing life stories to promote rights, sustainability, and the conservation of material, immaterial, scenic, and environmental heritage. Since 2017, she has coordinated the Água!nabara project; since 2020 she has coordinated the Malae Family Archive. She graduated in Comparative Literature and Afro-Luso-Brazilian Studies from Brown University (1986-1990) and holds an MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art (USA, 1995-1997). She is the author of Tall, Slim & Erect: Portraits of the Presidents (Les Figues Press, 2012; reissued by punctum books in 2023) and a literary translator, known for her translations of Fluxo-Floema by Hilda Hilst (Nightboat Books, 2018) and Saga of Brutes by Ana Paula Maia (Dalkey Archive Press, 2017).
