Université Paris Cité, France
My name is Penglei SU, and I am currently a PhD candidate in sociology at Université Paris Cité (URMIS/CESSMA). My doctoral research focuses on Chinese labor migration in the mining region of the Congolese Copperbelt. Positioned at the intersection of labor sociology, migration studies, and African studies, this project is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted within mining companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Before beginning my PhD, I pursued my academic training in France, earning a Master’s degree in Comparative Literature from Sorbonne Nouvelle, as well as a diploma in Swahili from INALCO. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in French Language and Literature from China.
My research is deeply informed by hands-on professional experience in the field. I have worked as an interpreter, trainer, and external relations officer in various Francophone African countries, including Bukavu, Niamey, and most recently, Fungurume, within a mining company. These experiences have enabled me to bridge empirical and theoretical perspectives on labor relations, transnational migration, and Chinese engagement in Africa.
