Juliane Schumacher is a geographer working on the political ecologies and economies of climate change. Holding degrees in environmental sciences, philosophy and political science and a PhD in social and economic geography, she is particularly interested in the changing relations between societies and their non-human environments. She has been a member of the working groups 'Politics of Resources' and 'Environment and Justice' at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) since 2014, studying the integration of forests in North Africa into global carbon markets and questions of global justice in green transitions. Since 2024 she is based at Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, Germany, where, as part of the project Biomaterialities, she researches the effects of AI-based valuations of ecosystem services. Beside her academic work, Juliane Schumacher is working as a freelance journalist, author and curator for more than 15 years, with a focus on questions around climate change and the anthropocene.
