Nalini Elvino de Sousa is a filmmaker, television producer, and ethnomusicologist whose work bridges Lusophone cultures across continents. After completing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Lisbon University, she moved to Goa, where she earned a Master's degree in Portuguese Literature from Goa University, followed by a second Master's in Ethnomusicology in 2023 at Aveiro University. Her creative practice and research explore the intersections of music, memory, identity, and postcolonial heritage, particularly in Goa and its diasporic connections.
Since 2006, she has directed, produced, and anchored 75 documentary episodes for RTPi (Portuguese International Channel), showcasing Goan culture, architecture, and cuisine through Lotus Film & TV Production. Her work engages deeply with issues of cultural preservation and environmental awareness. Some of her films include the short documentary “Water” (2010), on water conservation, and “Dances of Goa” (2012), a visual archive of traditional Goan dances, some on the brink of extinction. In 2018, she produced Special Envoy, a mid-length documentary exploring liberation movements. Her recent documentary Kantar Goa (2024) traces the legacy of cantaram in Goan theatre. The film was featured at the 48th ICTM World Conference in New Zealand 2025.
Currently, she chronicles the lives of Portuguese in India through the RTPi series Hora dos Portugueses, having completed over 180 episodes. Nalini aims to document and celebrate transnational Lusophone identities through film and music.
