In a context of great political and diplomatic investment in the heritagization of the Portuguese-speaking (CPLP, PALOP) postcolonial “common past” through commemorations and musealization projects, what possibilities exist for other regimes and processes of memory? If top-down approaches to heritagization are challenged, for example, by decolonial movements, this frictional logic does not exhaust the dynamics and possibilities of memorialization, within and beyond the post-colonial. But on the other hand, alternative movements of heritagization and memorialization configure, in one way or another, movements of “subversion”, in the sense that they represent alternative ways of thinking about collection, curation, and exhibition processes. This panel proposes a debate around alternative and extra- or even counter-institutional movements of heritagization in the Portuguese-speaking public space in the Global South, from Asia to Africa and South America, exploring dimensions of circulation, mobilization, and memorial and heritage production within the scope of post- or decolonial struggles. How do these emerging dynamics reflect new heritagizing paradigms? To what extent and in what ways do these movements configure or are identified as subversive processes? What is the historical and historiographical conversation they promote?
