Paper Abstract: We explore how the borderland(sea) context offers a unique geopolitical lens for understanding Pesantren As’adiyah Sebatik, an Islamic boarding school on Sebatik Island at the Indonesia-Malaysia border, in contrast to other land-based pesantrens. In particular, we argue that practices in pesantren are tied to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by its borderland(sea) context—shaping the intersections of Islamic identity, cultural exchange, and national belonging. First, the experiences of students and educators at this pesantren are profoundly influenced by their proximity to a dynamic geopolitical landscape. The border enables cross-border collaborations that enrich the curriculum, facilitating the integration of diverse cultural perspectives that would be less accessible in a non-border setting. Second, the negotiation of identity within this borderland fosters a hybrid understanding of citizenship, as students navigate the complexities of belonging to both Indonesian and Malaysian narratives. The awareness of border fluidity encourages critical thinking and adaptability, highlighting the distinct educational mission of Pesantren As’adiyah Sebatik. Finally, the emergence of what we call “wrinkles”—subtle disruptions in identity shaped by local agency—underscores the resilience and innovation inherent in the pesantren’s approach to education. We conclude by reiterating that the borderland(sea) context is not merely a location but a vital geopolitical backdrop that shapes how pesantrens navigate and articulate hybrid identities, educational reforms, and cross-cultural exchanges.
