[Activity/Workshop] Humanities Across Borders: Trans-Humance - Knowledge in Circulation

Trans-Humance is a collaborative artistic research project initiated by Cécile Ndiaye, in dialogue with artisanal women tanners and scientists from Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD Dakar) and ITECH (Lyon). It explores the sensitive relationships between leather, the living, and the territory through an interdisciplinary approach combining vernacular practices and scientific methods. The project aims to document, question, and transmit know-how related to vegetable tanning, creating new narratives based on the material, the bodies who work it, and the environments it transforms.
As part of a collaboration facilitated by Humanities Across Borders (International Institute for Asian Studies – IIAS), Cécile Ndiaye partners with artisan dyer Idrissa Badri. For this workshop, they will receive plant-dyed leathers sourced from Mali—marking the beginning of a cross-border exchange and material dialogue between artisans and researchers. The workshop will focus especially on indigo and natural finishing techniques.
Through this collective experience, participants will be introduced to dye application techniques, leatherwork, and the history of these deeply rooted practices within shifting territories. In the presence of artisan women tanners and students, the workshop becomes a space for knowledge circulation, sensory experimentation, and embodied transmission.

Trans-Humance est un projet de recherche artistique collaboratif initié par Cécile Ndiaye, en dialogue avec des tanneuses artisanes, des scientifiques de l’université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) et de l’ITECH (Lyon). Il explore les relations sensibles entre le cuir, le vivant et le territoire à travers une démarche interdisciplinaire mêlant pratiques vernaculaires et méthodes scientifiques. Le projet vise à documenter, interroger et transmettre des savoir-faire liés au tannage végétal ; en créant de nouveaux récits à partir de la matière, des corps qui la travaillent et des milieux qu’elle transforme.

Dans le cadre d’une collaboration facilitée par Humanities Across borders (institute for Asian studies- IISA), Cécile Ndiaye s’associe à Idrissa Badri, artisan teinturier. Pour Cet atelier, des cuirs teints à base de plantes en provenance du Mali seront mis à disposition. Ce matériau, issu d’un échange transfrontalier, marque le début d’un dialogue de savoirs entre artisan.e.s et chercheur.e.s.

L’atelier portera particulièrement sur l’indigo et les techniques de finition naturelles. À travers cette expérience collective, les participant.e.s seront initié.e.s à différents gestes d’application de la teinture, au travail du cuir, et à l’histoire de ces pratiques ancrées dans des territoires en transformation. En présence de tanneuses artisanes et d’étudiant.e.s, cet atelier devient un espace de circulation des savoirs, d’expérimentation sensorielle et de transmission vivante.
