Joseph Beadle held the Choate Fellowship and Graduate Teaching Fellowship at Harvard University. He will soon begin his PhD in the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge, funded by the Economic & Social Research Council. Based on ongoing fieldwork in Rwanda and China, Joe’s doctoral research concerns algorithmic technologies, development, and governance in relation to Africa-China relations. In addition, Joe is interested in questions of nation-building and state-society relations in China, and is currently completing a co-authored monograph on the subject. Outside his academic work, he is a semi-professional musician, and has played in churches and concert venues in Rwanda and Zambia.
