Nguyễn T. Thuỳ-Trang is a PhD Candidate in Human Geography at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, US. Nguyễn’s research engages with theories of colonialism and decoloniality, psychoanalysis, postcolonial visual culture, and world cinema. Her current dissertation examines the avant-garde psychiatric/psychotherapeutic praxis in Vietnam and Algeria post-WWII, within a broader theoretical framing of Africa-Asia connection, decoloniality, and critical social theory from the Global South. Engaging with archival materials, psychoanalysis, postcolonial visual culture, and literary works (some produced by psychiatric patients themselves), her research proposes a reconfiguration of the psychiatric asylum space by studying situated practices and encounters emerging from such space. Besides research, Nguyễn is also a practicing psychotherapist, specializing in treating traumatic stress in children and adolescents. She grew up in Vietnam.
