University of McGill, Canada
I am a doctoral student at the University of McGill in Geography. My research revolves around understanding how Black people negotiate space and place when they migrate to East Asia, more specifically to Japan and South Korea. In other words, I am interested in the ways Afro-Asian placemaking and liberation can articulate itself within a Black Pacific. In my past research, I have sought to understand how race and citizenship play a role in informing African immigrants of their positionality in urban Japan, and the various ways and spaces in which they build community. More than thinking about how “Blackness” can be understood and deployed in various parts East Asia and Oceania, I am interested in how a Black Pacific framework can offer a new way of being and living together in an ever changing world, where solidarity is key to survival.
