As an anthropologist, I document and question relationships to nature in several cities in sub-Saharan Africa. From waste management in two medium-sized cities in Cameroon, to relationships with plants in Ìbàdàn (Nigeria), via perceptions of environmental change among residents of the small mining town of Hwange in Zimbabwe, I combine ethnographic research, methods derived from ethnoscience and artistic collaborations in the field to understand local knowledge on urban biodiversity, the role of nature in defining urban identities and the place given to plants in municipal governance in the era of the “sustainable city”.
