Roundtable Abstract:
In this double roundtable, panelists from two transdisciplinary networks, Humanities Across Borders (HAB) and the River Cities Network (RCN) of the IIAS, explore the ecological crisis in African and Asian contexts where they pursue their research and professional activities, from multiple perspectives in the humanities, social and natural sciences. This roundtable offers a shared space for environmental scientists and engineers to engage with humanities and social science scholars to explore a range of questions pertaining to riverine ecologies with a special focus on connections, comparisons, and collaborations along the Africa-Asia axis of knowledge. Our overarching questions are: What is the extent of the ecological crisis, and in which ways does it manifest itself, and who is it affecting? What can be done to rediscover a co-existence with our rivers, with water, and with our ecosystems? What is the role for universities, schools, civil society organizations, individual citizens, as well as business in an era where governments are failing to address multiple ecological crises? And finally, what vocabularies and methodologies can be shared across disciplines to attend to the gaps in our understanding of riverine ecologies, both human and nonhuman?
