Roundtable Abstract:
The roundtable "Healing through Humanity" aims to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue that bridges African and Asian knowledge systems in pursuit of the goal of Health for All. By highlighting the crucial yet often overlooked role of human attributes and socio-cultural perspectives in health and well-being, this forum brings together healthcare professionals, psychologists, sociologists, cultural anthropologists, policymakers, and those in education and training to examine how intrinsic human qualities and socio-cultural contexts are woven into effective care, public health interventions, policies, and our daily life.
Generally speaking, conventional medicine is based on Western-oriented knowledge and practice. In the past 200 years, Western-orientation medical practice has been dismissed worldwide through missionary work, colonial activities and economic operations. The majority of traditional medicines and the indigenous healing practice has been marginalised in the past centuries. Nonetheless, the traditional medical practices and healing rituals are steeds interwoven in various life courses and support social or communal systems in Africa, Asia, and many non-modern-western regions.
This roundtable follows an academic panel session under the same theme title “Healing through humanity”, which presents the academic debates on the potential humanistic models for healthcare and medical practices. It calls attention to the forgotten wisdom of healing and rediscovering the implacable function of these healing and medical practices in the modern days. At the same time, we encourage conventional medical practice to discover the human approach of indigenous healing wisdom – the connections with nature, with humans, with spirituality, and with ourselves. This event opens an opportunity for an open dialogue for sharing the conclusion of the academic panel and exchanging ideas in a public setting.
